What is Oud? The World's Most Expensive Fragrance Ingredient Explained
If you have been drawn into the world of Arabian perfumery recently — whether through TikTok, a friend's recommendation, or simply stumbling across a bottle that stopped you in your tracks — chances are you have encountered the word "oud."
But what exactly is oud? Why does it smell the way it does? And why is it worth more than gold by weight?
WHAT IS OUD?
Oud (also spelled "aoud" or "oudh") is a resinous heartwood that forms inside Aquilaria trees when they become infected with a specific type of mould. The tree responds to this infection by producing a dark, aromatic resin — and it is this resin-saturated wood that we call agarwood, or oud.
The infection process is rare and unpredictable. Only about 2% of wild Aquilaria trees ever produce oud — which is why genuine oud is one of the rarest and most expensive natural materials on earth.
HOW DOES OUD SMELL?
Oud has a complex, multi-layered scent that is almost impossible to describe in a single sentence. Depending on its origin and how it has been processed, oud can smell:
- Woody and smoky — like a campfire in a cedar forest
- Sweet and balsamic — like dark honey mixed with sandalwood
- Earthy and animalic — rich, deep, and primal
- Floral and soft — particularly in Indian oud varieties
Most people describe their first encounter with oud as immediately recognisable — there is nothing else quite like it in the fragrance world.
WHY IS OUD SO EXPENSIVE?
Genuine oud is extraordinarily rare and labour-intensive to produce:
- Only infected Aquilaria trees produce oud resin
- Wild trees take decades to mature
- Extraction is done by hand
- A single kilogram of high-quality oud oil can cost between $5,000 and $30,000
This rarity is why oud has been treasured across the Arabian Gulf, South Asia, and East Asia for thousands of years — burned as incense in palaces, mosques, and royal courts.
